West Winter Fastbridge Info

Starting next week students will begin Winter FastBridge testing during their Language and Literature classes.

FastBridge is an assessment we use to screen students in math and literacy. It also allows us to monitor student growth. The goal of having the students complete these tests is for us to understand any potential gaps in the students' learning and then create plans to fill them.

West Middle School will be testing on the following dates:

Reading:

Monday February 2nd (A day)
Tuesday February 3rd (B day)

Preparing for Fastbridge:

Charge ipads
You will need your ipad charged for testing.
Bring  Wired Headphones
All students will require wired headphones for the tests.
Eat Well
Having a good breakfast (at home or school) and a good lunch with help you stay focused and be at your best.
Get Enough Sleep
A tired brain is not an effective brain. Make sure to get enough sleep the nights before testing.

Hate Speech Protocols

Words matter. The way we communicate with each other shapes the kind of community we build, and it is essential that all students and staff feel safe, respected, and valued in our school environment. West is committed to addressing harmful language, including hate speech, as part of our responsibility to foster a positive, inclusive atmosphere.

If a student makes a hateful comment towards other students these are the steps we follow as a staff. First Time: Redirect the student, document the incident, and engage in a restorative conversation with those affected. Second Time: SEST will intervene, and the student will meet with administration to process the incident and participate in a restorative conversation. We will call home and document the incident. Third Time: Document the behavior, and administration will assign appropriate consequences, including restorative measures.

We are committed to using this as a teachable moment to encourage students to be respectful toward one another, regardless of personal beliefs or differences. Please speak to your child about this policy. Thank you for your support in reinforcing these values at home.

Keep the Flu Out of Our School

Seasonal influenza (flu) is a respiratory illness that may cause a fever, dry cough, sore throat, headache, extreme tiredness, and body aches. It usually starts to circulate during the fall and winter months. We have seen an uptick in cases at WMS recently.

Please reinforce healthy habits at home to help reduce the spread of germs including covering coughs, washing hands, staying home when sick, cleaning frequently touched surfaces, and wearing masks or distancing, if coughing. This is especially important during the Holidays as we gather with friends and family.

Winter Coats Available

Winter has arrived and it is cold, we want to ensure every student stays warm and comfortable this season. We have a number of lightly used, freshly laundered coats available in a variety of sizes, and we are happy to share them with any student who needs one.

If your family is in need of a winter coat for your child or a sibling, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our school counselors( Laura.Stark@hopkinsschools.org and Correne.Larsen@hopkinsschools.org). Your request will be handled with care and confidentiality.
