Transportation updates and next steps

Transportation updates and next steps

We are aware that some families have experienced challenges with school transportation this fall. While this does not apply to most families, we want to be transparent about the issues we’ve identified and the steps underway to resolve them.

Below is a brief update on each area of focus:

  • The problem: The number of No-Bus Zone (NBZ) families reported as routed at the early October School Board meeting was not accurate.
    • The update: The figure reflected families identified and routed before they were officially notified. Updated communication was sent the following day confirming routes for those families.
  • The problem: Some open-enrolled and in-district transfer (IDT) families have not heard from us since August.
    • The update: While we can’t guarantee a preferred route for every IDT or open-enrolled student, now that all no-bus zone families have been routed, our next priority is offering available bus spots to families who opted in for transportation. We expect this work to be completed before Thanksgiving.
  • The problem: Some NBZ routes need further safety review.
    • The update: The transportation department is evaluating how certain roads affect students’ ability to access bus stops and schools. We’re developing a consistent process for identifying and addressing “hazard roads” to ensure safety and fairness across routes.
  • The problem: Metropolitan Transportation Network (MTN) has discontinued its paid transportation service, impacting a small number of families.
    • The update: Although MTN’s decision was outside of district control, we are reaching out directly to affected families and offering them the opportunity to apply for district busing for the 2025–26 school year, even though the application deadline has passed.

If your family continues to face transportation challenges, please email schoolbus@hopkinsschools.org with details about your situation. We will get back to you within 24 hours. Your feedback helps us identify and prioritize where adjustments are most needed.
